Wild Tiger Shrimp and Farmed Tiger Prawn

Farmed Tiger Prawn

Similar to the vannamei shrimp, tiger shrimp is a species that can be cultivated in controlled environments. It is now recognized as a cultivated species in various regions worldwide, including Iran. However, due to physiological differences and limitations specific to farmed-raised tiger shrimp, its cultivation is currently limited to a small scale and a few select shrimp farms.

One of the challenges associated with farmed tiger shrimp cultivation in Iran is the higher risk of disease compared to other shrimp species. Notably, various fungal diseases pose a significant concern. Certain fungi can even produce aflatoxin, which can be detrimental to consumer health.

To ensure the safety of consumers, it is essential to implement rigorous disease management practices during green tiger shrimp cultivation. This includes regular monitoring, preventive measures, and appropriate treatment protocols to mitigate the risk of fungal disease contamination. By prioritizing the health and quality of tiger shrimp, the industry can provide consumers with a safe product.

Wild Tiger Shrimp

In the case of wild tiger shrimp, they are primarily migratory species that usually approach the waters of the Bushehr province. When purchasing green tiger shrimp from fishermen, conducting various tests, including tests for heavy metals, is crucial.

This is done to ensure that the wild tiger shrimp meet the safety standards and regulations regarding pollutant levels. By conducting these tests, the quality and safety of the Iranian tiger shrimp can be verified.

It’s worth noting that a significant portion of Iran’s exported tiger shrimp consists of wild-caught shrimp. When proper storage, inspection and transportation conditions are met, these shrimp can offer high quality and minimal exposure to pollutants. Adhering to strict protocols, helps ensure that the shrimp retain their, safety, freshness, taste, and nutritional value. This emphasis on quality control contributes to the reputation of Iran’s tiger shrimp in the international market.

Tiger Shrimp Catching Steps

Fishing vessels

One of the primary methods of harvesting wild tiger shrimp in Iran is through the use of fishing vessels or wooden barges, employing techniques such as trawling or floor-sweeping. This approach is considered the most cost-effective means of exploiting the green tiger shrimp stocks in Iran.

However, due to the substantial volume of catch associated with this method, various restrictions have been implemented to ensure sustainable fishing practices and the preservation of the tiger shrimp population. These restrictions aim to strike a balance between the economic benefits of exploitation and the long-term conservation of this valuable resource.

Small boats

Another method of fishing for tiger shrimp in Iran involves the use of small boats operated by local fishermen. These boats are equipped with baskets or nets that allow for a more careful and selective harvest. The green tiger shrimp caught using this method tends to be of higher quality, as it is handled with greater care and reaches the market in a shorter amount of time.

The small boats operated by local fishermen can operate throughout most months of the year. This method benefits from a smaller volume of harvest, allowing for a more sustainable and continuous fishing practice. This approach not only supports the livelihoods of these communities but also contributes to the preservation of wild tiger shrimp stocks in the long run.

Moshta

Moshta

The final method for catching tiger shrimp in Iran is the Moshta (Fishing weir) method. This traditional technique relies on the natural movement of tides to capture a diverse range of species including crustaceans such as lobsters, crabs, and shrimps that inhabit the nearshore and muddy waters.

The Moshta method is characterized by its low harvest volume and high biodiversity. As a result, the products obtained from this type of catch are primarily sold to meet the needs of the local community. While the scale of production may be limited, this method plays a crucial role in supporting the local economy and fulfilling the demand for fresh seafood within the community.
